City of Calgary holiday activities

Calgarians will have plenty of fun, free activities to partake in over the holidays but one annual celebration must regretfully be cancelled until next year.

The City of Calgary’s 2009 New Year’s Eve family celebration Bright Night is cancelled due to challenges with the ice plant upgrades at Olympic Plaza and the lead time required to stage this end-of-year party.

***Update- the ice has been installed over the holidays, so people can skate at Olympic Plaza if they want on New years Eve, however, without the free entertainment and fireworks. There will also be a free New Years Eve Calgary transit service.

Calgarians who are interested in New Years Eve celebrations can consider festivities held by The City’s civic partners:
  • Zoo Years Eve at the Calgary Zoo: Welcome the New Year with this family friendly event. Start the night with fabulous entertainment, the beautiful lights of Zoolights, and cap off the night with an 8:30 pm fireworks display. Tickets must be pre-purchased; a limited number of tickets are available.
  • Selkirk Grille at Heritage Park Historical Village: Ring in the New Year at Selkirk Grille, with an exquisite five course dinner. Bring friends and family and enjoy everything from lobster bisque to braised short rib ravioli. Pre-purchase your tickets by calling 403-268-8500.

Over the holidays there will also be other activities to partake in, like free public skating December 26 at the following arenas: Ernie Starr, Frank McCool, Murray Copot, Optimist/George Blundun, Jimmie Condon, Shouldice, Henry Viney, Stu Peppard Arena

There is also plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors by hiking on Calgary’s natural trails, watching wildlife, skating on an rink or go tobogganing. All of those events can be found here on Calgary.ca.

All indoor pools will be closed on: Christmas Day, Friday, December. 25, 2009 Boxing Day, Saturday, December 26, 2009 and New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1, 2010

All other indoor recreation info: Calgary.ca/recreation

Have a safe and happy end to 2009 (and beginning of 2010) and enjoy all that Calgary has to offer this holiday season!

Too bad Bright Night was cancelled. I was looking forward to one of the few family orientated New Years Eve celebrations in the city!

Yup. I am a fan of what the City delivers for services however they dropped the ball on this one.

The area of the City responsible for Bright Night understands it (New Years Eve) occurs once per year on the same day? They should maybe put a plan together for it.

I was surprised to hear of the cancellation at such a late date, as I had planned on taking my boys to this NYE event. With all the facilities in our city, why couldn't this event be moved to a different public venue, instead of cancelling a Family Friendly night outright?

Well that sucks the kids were all planned for it, because they enjoyed it so much last year :(

One of the largest city in Canada can't even plan an event to celebrate the NY. What a shame.

If there was a time for the city to plan a really nice even, then it would be now for New years eve! So the O park is closed, that's still no reason not to do something. We won't forget this!

Maybe the city should spend our hard earned tax dollars, which they are so ready to grab, on a NYE celebration. An event like this brings the people of Calgary together more than a ridiculous bridge or ugly monstrosities to accommodate rose bushes. City Council seems to be focused on wrong priorities these days. They should be ashamed that we have no NYE festivities for the general public as not all people can afford the expensive parties they attend!

Im not surprise at all until we have this Mayor we will be in 19 Century.
Shame he maybe do not have a budget he took all for him self .
Where are the alderman's to complain .they are busy sharing their share of 2009. Calgarians Calgarians I really do not have a word to describe you guys , I need to spent money to go to the other cities to have fun when I cannot have in my city where I pay taxes to the man who do not have a shame.

Funny how the money gets spent in this city- If if is something the mayor wants then he goes all out. Fuuny how the newspapers and tv stations are mum on the subject. Our money should be spent on things that benefit the entire city like widening Glenmore trail etc, instead of a really ghastly bridge that will benefit only a few.........Pretty obvious that he is oblivious to what we the people think.

Just thought we'd let you know that we've passed your feedback on Bright Night along to the appropriate business unit for their information and consideration.
