Calgary school zone time changes for new school year



The City of Calgary with the support of our partners has adjusted school zone times to begin 30 minutes earlier than previous years. The change will help increase safety for children who attend schools that have an early start time and for children who are involved in extracurricular activities prior to the school day.

The new School Zone times are 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

  1. Where would we find a list of schools operating whole year as I read an bylaws (http://www.calgary.ca/DocGallery/BU/cityclerks/26m96.pdf )that only to those new hours apply ? Or maybe we should stop at any playground ? How to recognize those schools - important for visitors to the city( maybe each school could have sing "open" when operating?
    Please make it clear as no article in any media speaks to that.

    Here is a list of Calgary Catholic schools that run year-round.

    Also, the School Zone signs specify when the schools are year-round.

    I'm willing to go out on a limb here and say that every cent the city may have spent on changing the signage is worth it if it prevents even one kid from getting hit by a car while they're going to school.

    This is from our Roads department.

    • There are 169 school zones in Calgary.
    • There are 751 “school zone begins…” signs and “751 school zone ends …” signs.
    • The cost to retrofit the signs with decals (stickers) with the new time was $25 per sign. That’s how we addressed the new times.
    • The cost to change all 751 “school zone begins” signs would be $200-250 per sign. Signs will be replaced as needed (if an old one is damaged, knocked over, etc.)
    • There are 410 schools in Calgary in total.

  7. They have changed my kids' school to start earlier this year. School now BEGINS at 8am, so I am glad that these changes have been put in place.
