Hello Pencils, Hello Books! Two back to school tips for Calgarians.

September is back-to-school season and The City of Calgary has a couple of tips in hopes of making that transition easier.

First, a reminder about new school zone times. Many children participate in extracurricular activities that take place before the start of classes, so it’s necessary to slow down in those early hours to make sure students are safe. This is especially important with the approach of winter (I know - we hardly even got a summer) and school hours begin before the sun’s up. To keep Calgary’s children safe, be sure to follow the new times.

School starts on September 2nd for traditional calendar years and on August 17th for modified calendars. Additional information on breaks in public school calendars is available on the websites for The Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. Second, The City has a new resource for parents of children aged six to 16 – Calgary Afterschool. Calgary Afterschool is a searchable database of city-wide after school programs offering free access to a variety of quality supervised activities between 3 and 6 pm weekdays. The programs can be searched by program type, address or school. Watch the video below for more information on this tool.

The program is a collaboration of several groups including Family & Community Support Services, The City of Calgary Recreation, Alberta Child Care Resources for Parents, Inform Alberta and Calgary’s Child.
