I live in Scenic Acres. Please explain the city's policy of using churches as polling stations. I am an atheist and deeply resent having to enter a church (or any other religous building) to exercise my right to vote. I assume that the city pays for the use of these facilities - public funds should not go to religous groups, especially when there are numerous publicly owned buildings that could be used. Please stop this discriminatory practice.
ReplyDeleteWhat time do the polls close?
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteThe polls close at 8 p.m., however, everyone at the polling station (there by 8 p.m.) will still be able to vote. A deputy returning officer will stand at the back of the line at 8 p.m.
So, if you're there by 8 p.m. you vote regardless of the line-up, if you're not, you won't.
Thanks
when will results be declared?
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous 1:47 pm:
ReplyDeleteOnce the polls close at 8 p.m., ballots will be counted. Preliminary results will be posted as they come in right here on calgarycitynews.com as well as on calgary.ca/election
I live in the Country Hills area and I as well need to enter a church in order to vote. I don't believe this facility (church) is the best place to use tax payers money for the sake of voting. I rather visit a public school. Policy should be available to citizens and amended to avoid using places of worship for city matters.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous 11:32 am and Anonymous 2:01 pm:
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comments. We will pass this feedback along to the Elections Office for their consideration for future elections.
Stop your whining!!! It's a building when NOT being used as a place of worship. Get over it!
ReplyDeleteRoger Peters
I'm not afraid to show my name.
The church is a building. God won't drop down on you for entering the door. Of all the important issues there are to think about I can't believe this is the one you are most concerned with.
ReplyDeletewhat is the link for the election results?
ReplyDeleteHI Sheila, the election results will start coming in sometime after 8 p.m. at calgary.ca/election/2010results Thanks!

When and who takes down the signs?
ReplyDeleteI am a two minute walk from one polling station and my designated polling station is a 4 minute drive. I know that this small inconvenience should be minor compared to my civic duty, but I'm curious who the heck draws the polling lines???????? That person should be fired . . .
ReplyDeleteDear: Atheist's
ReplyDeleteif it was a Calgary Catholic School would that resent you as well? And if entering a building thats prime principal is religious worship causes you resent ment then maybe you are not an atheist, but just need something to whine about. Life doesn't always go your way, the city tried to accommodate all of its citizens. If a Muslim, Budist, Jew or even other Atheist's can go and vote in a church then maybe you should overlook your self importance.
Mike H.
Question: is campaigning allowed after the polls open? We received a pre-recorded campaign solicitation call from the Richard Dur campaign (Ward 14) at 11:53 a.m. today. Is this against the rules?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 5:39,
ReplyDeleteCandidates and their teams are responsible for taking down signs shortly after the election (as per temporary sign bylaw).
Thanks,
I live within walking distance from my polling station, but my designated polling station is within driving distance. To be able to vote outside of my designated polling station, I have to go through quite a process. Something should be fixed in regards to the polling station designations if the city wants to stop voter apathy
ReplyDeleteHello all,
ReplyDeleteI am an atheist and I don't care if I vote in a Church, Temple or Synagogue.
Happy Voting!
What happens if polling stations run out of specific ballots and voters are unable to vote?
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous 7:14,
ReplyDeleteIf ballots are running low, additional ballots will be couriered out to polling stations. Anyone who is in line to vote by 8 p.m. will have a ballot to vote with.
Thanks!
And yes . . . Happy Voting all!
ReplyDeleteCountry Hills doesn't have any schools nor a community centre. The Harvest Hills Alliance Church is the largest building in that neighbourhood and most convenient for the voters in Country Hills. It's a no-brainer.
ReplyDeletemay i vote at any voting station or only my designated one? thanks.
ReplyDeleteSorry Anonymous 7:23,
ReplyDeleteIf you did not take advantage of alternative voting methods, you must vote at your designated voting station.
CTV Calgary is reporting Ward 14 has ran out of ballots. Can election Calgary update on how the ballot situation is being handled? Are ballots being transfered from other Ward or polling stations?
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Hi Kempton,
ReplyDeleteAdditional ballots were couriered to voting stations as a precautionary measure. The Elections Office have no confirmed reports of voting stations running out of ballots.
Thanks!
I love the live results. It would be really interesting if we could see which stations have reported.
ReplyDeleteJames
I live in Panorama Hills and went by the voting station at 7 pm. What a mess! I cannot believe that people were made to stand outside in the cold with their kids and families to vote. The polling station was tiny, there was no sense of order....it was terrible.
ReplyDeleteThey should have used the large public school down the street with a gym and indoor space to wait. Instead, I kept getting bumped from my spot in the line as I chased my toddler through the parking lot waiting my turn. Is this really what voting is supposed to be like? What if it was -30 degree outside? I thought we were trying to increase voter turnout!
With regards to Wayne Stewart dropping out and supporting Nenshi, will his votes go transfer over? What happens in this case, since his name was still on the ballet and advanced voting also was in place while he was still in the race?
ReplyDeleteRegarding candidates who dropped out of race,
ReplyDeleteThose votes for any candidate who declared that they were going to drop out will still be counted for that candidate per the election act.
Candidates had to withdraw within 24 hours of nomination day (September 20). The candidate’s name will still appear on the ballot and votes will still be counted.
Thanks
Are the people who facilitate the voting in the churches are from that church or they are from the election office? I found out they don't have the best behavior doing their job.
ReplyDeleteThey're from the election administration, obviously.
ReplyDeleteA polling station in ward 14 ran out of ballots and more then then 50 people left. Extra ballots never arrived. The people at the polling station were told that they had over 100 stations to deliver extra ballots to and they could not give a time for them to arrive. They never did.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous 12:38 am:
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comments. The Returning Officer will be looking into this matter.
How was the number of eligible voters arrived at? Is it voters that registered or was it done by census? I thought the number would be higher although I am extremely pleased at how many people came out to vote.
ReplyDeleteWhitney
Panorama Hills Mom? I assume mom and not dad by the language used. Chasing your todler through the parking lot? Perhaps you need better control of your child. A little discipline goes a long way. Standing out in the cold? For how long? I'll bet when you take your little Johnnie Trick-or-Treating, you'll be outside longer. And it will be colder. You were not "made" to do anything. Reconsider the priviledge you have to even come out and vote. Especially if you are a woman. It is obvious what your priorities are and level of thankfulness.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous 9:30 am:
ReplyDeleteThe number of eligible voters is the number of persons enumerated in April with the census. Hope this helps!
hey guys, you guys should suck it up about having to vote in a church, I live in a suburban neighbourhood and you guys would honestly be shocked at how many women were sneaking in to cast a ballot. At least at the churches they have some half decent security...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info about the amazing preliminary 2010 voter turn-out of 53.24% of eligible voters! Breaking 1989 record of 48.6% of eligible voters. Very proud to be a Calgarian today!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Thanks for the clarification of the incorrect report by CTV Calgary.
I am so frustrated and angry with trying to vote on Monday... actually FURIOUS would be more accuarate. I feel as though my rights have been taken from me.
ReplyDeleteI showed up with over 40 minutes before closing to the poling station that was both listed on the website and WHEN I PHONED YOUR OFFICE (I had recently moved and wanted to know how to change your office). I went to St. Elizabeth Seton school as told.
I found out with less than 7 minutes left and after waiting in 2 lines that I would not get to vote as YOUR OFFICE sent me to the wrong poling station. I had already wasted 40 minutes in line. I was then given the WRONG directions to Holy Trinity church (wherever that is) and never got to vote. I've never been so angry in my life and until now have never missed an election since turning 18. I know I'm not the only one as others rushed out of the building to also try and make it to Holy Trinity. You need better organization. I can't believe you would take my rights away like that.
I called and left a message with a very unapologetic lady and never got a return call. SHAME ON THE RETURNING OFFICER IN CALGARY!!!
Your Vote is about your democratic right not about what building you get to vote in...I am not sure if you are aware that with the Advanced Polls you could have chosen to vote at a building that was not offensive to you...I applaud the City in trying to give people many options...There was also Mail In Ballot and you didn't have to go to any building but your own home...Hope this helps for the next time you hve to vote in an Election for the City of Calgary
ReplyDeleteHi Frustrated Voter,
ReplyDeleteThis is from the Elections Office,
Thank you for the information. We regret that this confusion resulted in you being unable to cast your vote. The Elections Office has documented the incident for review to look at ways to improve customer communication and training.
Thanks,
This is from Bill Bruce, Director of Bylaw, regarding election signs.
ReplyDeleteA few people have asked questions and poseted comments via Twitter.
Q) How about coroplast sign drop off at leaf drop off zones next election?
A) The idea of the sign recycle drop off is a good one and I will take that up with Waste and Recycling Services to figure out how we can do it.
Q) I suggest a no signs on public property bylaw. The sign war was brutal in some wards.
A) Unfortunately, pre 1996 we had a bylaw that simply said no to signs on public property. This bylaw was challenged under the charter freedom of speech provisions and the court struck the bylaw down. The bylaw in place was directed by the court. We can however make changes to the bylaw to some extent. We are planning to consult with the public over the next few months on how they want their public property regulated and will recommend changes to City Council.
Comment) It was also frustrated that bylaw refused to enforce sign regulations. Signs 'buy' elections.
and
I almost took the bylaw issue into my own hands, it was ridiculous, maybe I should have.
A) Bylaw did not refuse to enforce and in fact had to redirect manpower from other citizen concerns to deal with candidates who simple did not respect the rules. Information packages we given to candidates prior to nominations closing and reminders were sent out a few weeks into the election. Some simply chose not to play by the rules. At any given time, there are only about 10 Bylaw Officers on duty city wide covering 24 different bylaws and 11 provincial acts. Over the past 10 years we have managed many elections at all 3 levels of government without incident. This was a very unique election in terms of candidate cooperation and those that disregarded the rules cost taxpayers thousands of dollars that should be directed to assisting citizens, not picking up illegal signs. I know many citizens did take the law into their own hands and I can’t blame them. Perhaps next election we should deputize some responsible citizens to help manage the illegal signs.
We hope this helps clarify some issues.
Thanks!
It does not. As a candidate in Ward 8 I was shocked to see John Mar (the law and order candidate?) place his signs on public property fully 10 days before we were legally allowed. I phoned to find out what was happening and was told that bylaw would not be enforcing sign laws in this election. Nothing was done about illegal signs and throughout the election the problem only got worse- culminating with signs well inside of 30 meters from polling stations on election day. Again- when we tried to address this situation we were told there would be no enforcement. I have a photograph of a polling station location indicator that was taped directly to one of Mar's signs.
ReplyDeleteI was also disappointed to hear from multiple sources that Beth Gigniac in the City's Arts and Culture Department was actively campaigning against me. Aren't civil servants supposed to be apolitical?
Hi Zak,
ReplyDeleteThis is from Bill Bruce,
(If you have any other issues we encourage you to call 3-1-1 - Thanks.)
Many candidates started early and were under the impression they could and that election signs were exempt. Based on a legal opinion we were put into a position where election signs were allowed before nomination day. This was transmitted through media that legally placed signs were permitted before nomination day. The 30 metre rule does not apply here and the only restriction is that signs may not be on or inside a polling station.
During the election, thousands of dollars worth of officer time was spent removing thousands of illegal signs and dealing with candidates violating the sign bylaw.
As far as a city employee working on a campaign, unless they attempt it during work hours or attempt to use their position to support a candidate, it is a constitutionally protected freedom to support a candidate.
I am under the understanding that Beth campaigned under the auspices of the department of Arts and Culture. Also- great to hear you 'tried'. Wondering why there were no results for your efforts in Ward 8. Would it have cost you money to tell the people at polling stations what the rules were and that they should be enforced? Also- how is it at all reasonable that you changed the rules once things started? What media was this transmitted through?
ReplyDeleteAlso Bruce- I called 311 during the campaign and was given case numbers and days to wait before being told that bylaw had decided not to do anything. 311 was unhelpful and I find your suggestion to call them one more example of a fairly unhelpful Calgary bureaucrat hiding behind another phone number.
ReplyDeleteMay any citizen take down signs in violation of the bylaw, during an election, if they document exactly where the sign was and how it was in violation?
ReplyDeleteThinking photos with geotagging (ie from iPhone) would be useful for evidence/justification.
Also, if a ban on public property being used will not stand up in court, how about one sign per candidate per block?
