Grade 9 student at Madeleine d'Houet Junior High School, Madeleine Gustavson, discovered today what it's like to be Mayor for a day.
After submitting an essay that entailed three ideas that she would implement to make Calgary an even better place to live through Youth Central’s Mayor for a Day contest, Madeleine spent her day discussing those ideas with Mayor Nenshi and City of Calgary staff.
In Madeleine’s essay entry for Mayor for a Day, she made recommendations to improve public transit, enhance the vibrancy of downtown streets at night, and increase overall sustainability in Calgary.
As part of the true “mayoral experience” Madeleine and Anamjit Siva from the Mayor's Youth Council at Youth Central met with media for a friendly scrum about her day at City Hall.
This is the first year that Youth Central has run their Mayor for a Day program, which stems from the Mayor’s Civic Engagement Committee’s 3 Things for Calgary Initiative. They plan to continue this program in years to come.
