Last year, Calgarians kept nearly 70,000 tonnes of recyclables out of City landfills.
By following a pair of simple steps, you can continue to help us make a difference:
- Place your recyclables loosely in your blue cart or community depot. Most items need to be loose for the sorting process to work - we accept: paper and cardboard, plastic jugs, bottles and food containers with recycling symbols 1 through 7, clean aluminium foil and food cans, glass bottles and jars
- Bundle together plastic bags in one bag and place shredded paper in a clear plastic bag
What happens to your recyclables?
The majority of your recyclables are sold to companies in North America to be used in new products. More than 85 per cent of recycling volume is paper products – which are then sold to companies in Alberta, Oregon and Washington State. Plastics are sold to companies in Alberta and British Columbia, while metal food cans go to a company in eastern Canada.
