Applications now open for the painted utility box program

Spring is here – soon flowers will be blooming, birds will be singing and most exciting of all, new utility boxes will be getting painted!

The City of Calgary invites local and area artists to submit proposals to create art on City utility boxes at various locations throughout Calgary.

This project provides opportunities for artists to create works of art that contribute to the vitality and attractiveness of the streetscape.

The City will prepare and prime each utility box prior to the artist painting the approved design, and supply a painting kit which will include Titanium White, Mars Black, Quinacridone Red, Cadmium Red Light, Arylide Yellow, Bismuth Yellow, Phthalo Blue and Ultramarine Blue exterior acrylic mural paint, masking tape, plastic drop sheet, safety vest and traffic cones. Cones, vest and any unused supplies must be returned before payment is made. Artists must supply their own brushes.

The artist fee paid will range from $400 to $1000 depending on the size of the utility box. If the artist prefers to work in aerosol paints, they will be compensated an additional $100 (maximum) for their supplies - receipts will be required.

Artist submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis and locations are assigned as time, weather and budget allow. A single utility box generally takes two days to complete but is dependent on the intricacy of the design and other variables.

This opportunity is being presented through The City of Calgary Roads with the support of the Public Art Program.
