A parking trial project in Bridgeland aimed at helping out small businesses in the area has been expanded.
In September, 2011, a pilot project was launched offering free 30-minute progressive parking rates along General Avenue N.E. Transportation has now approved extending that to offer free parking for two hours on 1 Avenue N.E. between 7 Street N.E. and 9A Street N.E.
The recent changes will allow local business patrons to park for free for up to two hours as part of a one-year trial. The City has been working closely with Alderman Gian-Carlo Carra on this development to find a way to accommodate business owners, visitors and residents of the area. While two-hour parking is free, the ParkPlus machines will remain in place while the trail program is underway.
The intent of the rate change is to promote short-term parking in the spaces immediately adjacent to the businesses, while encouraging longer-staying vehicles to use the other available parking locations on 1 Avenue N.E., 8A Street N.E. and 9 Street N.E.
The City of Calgary is currently monitoring parking in both of these zones, to evaluate the effectiveness of the trial and determine if the changes will be made permanent.
Parking trials such as this are not something that can be done in every area. However, if there is a compelling rationale, support from the community and the area alderman, and little impact to traffic, The City will consider a trial program to assess the value and impacts.
