Council to review proposed cab fare increase

On July 30, 2012 City Council approved a taxi metre rate increase of 4.4 per cent to take effect in October.

Taxi meter rates have not increased since July 2008 and the 4.4 per cent was arrived at by tracking actual costs to operate a taxi. Stats Canada data is also used, allowing for rates to be adjusted in a fair and predictable way for both consumers and the taxi industry. (Details on the calculations are available here.)

Have ideas for improving the taxi system? Get involved! The Taxi and Limousine Advisory Committee (TLAC; formerly the Taxi Commission), makes recommendations to Council about taxi industry regulation. TLAC is made up of community and industry stakeholders, including five members of the general public. The committee meets monthly and meetings are open to the public.

The taxi bylaw is also available online if you’d like to review current regulations.

For more information about volunteering to sit on TLAC, please contact the City Clerk's office at 403-268-5861. Positions typically open up each fall.
