Last summer, The City of Calgary initiated a weekend parking pilot on Edmonton Trail, at the request of the community association, ward aldermen and businesses in the area. The pilot project was monitored over a period of two months, and feedback was collected from the local businesses and commuters in the area.
“The pilot program was very popular, particularly with the local businesses,” says Abdou Souraya, Traffic Leader for Parking and Traffic Assessment. “The availability of on-street parking creates a more accessible and pedestrian-friendly environment, with convenient access to the businesses in the area. We’re very pleased to be part of this community-wide initiative to revitalize Edmonton Trail.”
The traffic volumes on Edmonton Trail decrease significantly in the evenings and on weekends, and demand for parking tends to increase during these times, making Edmonton Trail a solid candidate for off-peak parking.
Parking will be available during the following times:
- Monday to Friday: After 6 p.m.
- Saturday / Sunday and holidays: 2 hour parking limit.
The City will evaluate the new parking program regularly over a one-year period, using the following criteria:
- Parking usage
- Safety (both pedestrian and vehicular)
- Traffic flow
- Public feedback (via 3-1-1 and comments collected through the Alderman’s Office)
