Facebook Timeline - Snapshots of Calgary's Rich History

The City of Calgary would like to know what milestones in our city’s rich history matter to you?

If you have visited The City’s Facebook Page recently, you may have noticed the addition of some important milestones in Calgary’s history. As Heritage Week falls upon us, it is important to celebrate Calgary’s past. With Facebook’s recent introduction of the Timeline profile, The City has embraced the opportunity to strengthen our rich heritage online.

According to Facebook, Timeline allows one to highlight the photos, posts and life events of your story in a visual, scrolling, reverse-chronologically ordered timeline. With a strong and interesting history, The City of Calgary has taken the time to share these memories online.

There is a lot of interesting history in Calgary that we wanted to incorporate in the timeline, such as how Calgary got its name, when Calgary was officially incorporated as a city and even quirky information like when the first parking metres were installed downtown. Next, we visited The City’s Corporate Records and Archives and matched each milestone with a vintage photo.

As the timeline continues to grow, The City of Calgary wants to celebrate all that makes this city unique and united. By integrating Calgary’s past with Calgary’s future, it has never been easier to remember how far Calgary has come to become a great city. Take a look; you might be surprised what you find.  If there are any milestones you’d like to see on the timeline, please let us know – because after all, Calgary’s history is your history.
