Smoke testing at Westbrook and 69 Street this weekend

Westbrook Station platform level
As part of the West LRT's testing phase, crews will be conducting simulated smoke testing in the underground tunnels and stations along the LRT line this weekend.

The smoke tests will take place at:
  • Westbrook Station - Between 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 and 6 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29
  • Westbrook West Tunnel - Between 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 and 6 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29
  • 69 Street Tunnel - On Saturday, Sept. 29, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
These tests are designed to measure the effectiveness of the ventilation system, at the underground station and in the tunnels, to remove smoke quickly and efficiently should a fire occur.

During the tests, numerous smoke devices will be placed on the track area and ignited, releasing smoke into the air. The simulated smoke may escape out of the skylights at Westbrook Station and out of the tunnels near the Westbrook and 69 Street stations.

The light-grey test smoke is harmless and virtually odourless. However, people with respiratory problems should remain clear of the active simulated smoke testing areas.

This smoke testing is standard procedure in advance of LRT operations and should not be cause for public concern.
