You’re invited to the West LRT celebrations
Calgarians are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the West LRT line this weekend by attending a community party at multiple LRT stations and Ernest Manning High School.
On Saturday, December 8, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., The City of Calgary will be hosting a family-friendly party with activities, food and entertainment that will span over 10 kilometres from the downtown core to 69 Street S.W.
The day’s events will kick off with speeches at the new Downtown West-Kerby Station at the west end of downtown at 10 a.m. The station marks the completion of the downtown 7 Avenue LRT Refurbishment Project which saw all stations in the downtown core expanded to handle the future four-car trains and upgraded to improve accessibility, safety and comfort.
Celebrations then continue with speeches at Sirocco Station at 10:30, followed by the official ribbon-breaking at 69 Street Station at 10:45 a.m.
*At 11:15 a.m., Alberta Premier Alison Redford and Mayor Naheed Nenshi will officially open the West LRT line with festivities at the new Ernest Manning High School.
There will be free hot chocolate and giveaways from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at each of the new stations along the west line and at the new high school. Three stations will also have events, activities and entertainment, with local businesses, including Westbrook Mall, getting in on the excitement with some special promotions.
Free shuttles will be available every 15 minutes from downtown to the 69 Street Station with stops at all new stations from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. for those folks who want to get to the main event before 11 a.m.
Free CTrain service will run between the downtown core and 69 Street Station from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Those attending are invited to donate a non-perishable food item to the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank.
