Keep Calgary’s sidewalks safe by clearing snow and ice
Calgarians awoke on Sunday morning to their first snowfall of the season. Now that the snow has stopped falling it’s time to get sanding, shovelling and scraping.
Keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice is all part of being a good neighbour and is a part of living and working in Calgary during the winter. Snow and ice left on sidewalks poses a threat of injury to pedestrians who can slip and fall. Especially at risk are older Calgarians, citizens using wheel chairs and walking aids, and those pushing strollers.
According to The City’s Street Bylaw, property owners are responsible for removing ice and snow from city sidewalks and pathways adjacent to their property within 24 hours after the snow has stopped falling. And, the sooner the snow is shovelled off, the less chance it will turn to ice.
Remember when shovelling snow from private driveways and sidewalks that the snow cannot be shovelled into the street or onto a City sidewalk. However, snow and ice from a city sidewalk may be shovelled into the street, so long as it does not impede traffic, block a driver’s ability to see, prevent collection of waste and recycling or cause any other obstruction.
For those icy patches that are hard to remove, a temporary solution is to visit one of several City sandbox locations and pick up free sand.
It is also important to know your responsibility if you own rental property. Homeowners are ultimately responsible for ensuring their sidewalks and pathways are cleared. While tenants might help with this task, they are not legally responsible.
Failure to remove snow or ice from sidewalks or pathways could result in a warning notice from The City of Calgary. And if it is not removed within 24 hours of the notice, The City will remove the snow and/or ice and the cost of this service will then be invoiced to the property owner.
