Downtown feature lighting goes dark for Earth Hour

The Roads Traffic division at The City of Calgary will be joining the ranks of organizations and citizens worldwide in support of Earth Hour this weekend.

Feature lighting will be temporarily turned off on the Centre Street Bridge, the 4 Street S.E. underpass (under 10 Avenue S.E.), the Riverwalk area  near Prince’s Island Park, and the Langevin  Bridge from  8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March  29.

The Roads Traffic Division has a number of ongoing energy saving initiatives, including the up and coming LED street lighting program. This project will focus on converting approximately 2,500 streetlights in five communities to more energy efficient bulbs. The new lighting installations are expected to begin in summer 2014.

Earth hour raises awareness of how energy use contributes to climate change and helps continue the conversation about how we, as a city, can reduce our impact.
