Here is a response to your inquiry from Cameron Dutnall, Chief Pilot with HAWCS.

Blade slap appears to be caused by a blade passing through the tip vortex shed by another blade in its proximity. Under certain configurations of forward speed. collective position, rate of descent, angle of bank / g being pulled, the blade tips fly through the vortices of the preceding blades and the interaction of the vortices causes the slap.

I love helicopters and often run out to see which one is flying over the house, I can, on most occations, tell buy the sound which style of chopper it is. Last night however as Hawks was flying over top the house I noticed that the pitch of the blade "slap" was deeper than usual, and was wondering why this would be.

Is it a question of atmospheric density? It was not very cold last night so the air would have been relativly thin right?
