Remembering the 2013 June flood; response, recovery and the road ahead - Calgary Emergency Management Agency

As the one year anniversary of the flood approaches, Bruce Burrell, Director of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) marvels at the experience and the outcome of the devastating flood. “Calgarians didn’t let the flood define them; instead, Calgarians defined the flood,” he says. “As one homemade sign posted during the flood pointed out, ‘We lost some stuff, but we gained a community."

In the weeks and months following the flood citizens have come together to make our city even better. Visitors to our city are amazed that less than a year ago we suffered the most costly disaster in Canadian history. “Together, we did some incredible things – and we will continue to work together,” says Burrell. “The numbers tell one story, but this really is a people’s story.”
