Construction begins at Prairie Winds Park

Construction is now starting at Prairie Winds Park to get that much needed facelift that you helped shape by sharing what you wanted to see in your park.

The upgraded park will have new features like a lookout at the top of the toboggan hill and better access into the park. We are also relocating the tennis courts to the southeast corner of the park, which people told us is an underused area. We’re adding lighting there too to extend the hours people can play.

Revitalizing a well-loved park

Other new elements of the park include an exciting new playscape, new wading pool with a lazy river, and a junior-sized cricket pitch that will replace the existing baseball diamond – just to name a few.

Prairie Winds Park has been a well-loved and well-used park in Calgary’s northeast for the past 25 years. The redevelopment of the park will revitalize and provide it with much-needed upgrades and improvements so it can continue serving the growing communities around it.

Being active and healthy are important to your quality of life. Having an upgraded space at Prairie Winds Park gives Calgarians another space to get out, be active and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Construction closures

While construction is happening, certain areas of the park will be closed to the public. Closures and construction updates will be provided at calgary.ca/prairiewindspark and on Twitter using #prairiewindspark.

Construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2017.

The free event begins at 9:30 a.m. with a short presentation by Councillor Ray Jones, Ward 5, and Anne Charlton, The City of Calgary Parks director.

Kid-friendly activities, light refreshments and lots of water fun are also planned for the opening.

A design first for North America

The spray park has been outfitted with brand new and upgraded spray and water features. Its design is the first of its kind in North America.

The upgrades and new equipment were made possible with funding from the Council-created Community Investment Fund (CIF). Through CIF, City Council gives back to Calgarians by investing in and supporting new community projects and critical lifecycle upgrades throughout the city.

What: Prairie Winds Spray Park re-opening

When: Wednesday, August 27 at 9:30 a.m.

Where:         Prairie Winds Park, 223 Castleridge Blvd. N.E.

Parking is available in the north parking lot, located off of Westwinds Crescent N.E. There is also a parking lot off of 54 Avenue N.E. As parking can fill up quickly, carpooling or taking Calgary Transit is also encouraged. Visit Calgary Transit to plan your route to the opening.

Prairie Winds Park Redevelopment: Your park, your say

Prairie Winds Park, one of Calgary’s most well-used and well-loved regional parks, is being redeveloped, and we want your input and ideas.

From July 14 to August 2, you can share your thoughts on the new park design. Public input will help inform and shape how the park looks and what elements and features should be included.

Ways to engage

To kick off engagement, The City is asking citizens to provide their feedback on the following two questions:
  1. What do you like most about Prairie Winds Park?
  2. What changes would improve Prairie Winds Park?
The different ways to share input and answer the questions are:

In-person
  • Provide comments on the sounding board located at Prairie Winds Park. Input and ideas are welcome in English, Punjabi, Urdu, Tagalog, Arabic and Gujarati.
  • Participate in Flag Day at Prairie Winds Park on July 26 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Use flags to vote on areas of the park you like, and areas where you’d like to see change.
Online
Text/SMS Messaging
  • Text your feedback to 331-431-5333 (Normal messaging rates apply. Check with your cell phone provider for details).
Prairie Winds Park opened nearly 25 years ago to serve the growing communities east of the airport. The redevelopment will revitalize the park and provide much-needed upgrades and improvements so it can continue to serve the communities around it. The newly renovated spray park, scheduled to reopen early August, will also be included in the new park design.

More information on how to get involved is also available at calgary.ca/prairiewindspark. Questions or comments can be emailed to parks@calgary.ca, or contact 311.
