Remembrance Day 2012 Events & Hours of Operation for City of Calgary Facilities

The City of Calgary will not be adjusting its hours of operation for services or facilities on Monday, November 12, 2012.

Some City facilities will be adjusting hours of operation on Remembrance Day - Sunday, November 11, 2012.

Calgary Transit
There are no changes to Calgary Transit service on Remembrance Day, Sunday, November 11, 2012.

Community Recycling Depots
Collection at Community Recycling Depots is not affected by the Remembrance Day holiday.

All City of Calgary Landfills (Spyhill, East Calgary and Shepard) will be closed on Remembrance Day.

Animal Services Centre
2201 Portland Street S.E.
Saturday, November 10th:  10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Sunday, November 11th:  CLOSED/Statutory Holiday – Remembrance Day
Monday, November 12th:  10 a.m. – 7 p.m.


Village Square and Southland Leisure Centres will be open from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Remembrance Day.

Free public swim on Remembrance Day - The following pools will offer free swimming between 1 - 2:30 p.m. and 3 - 4:30 p.m. (the half-hour break will be waived if capacity permits):

Foothills (N.W.)
Thornhill (N.W./N.E.)
Killarney (S.W.)
Acadia (S.E.)
Inglewood (S.E.)

All remaining Aquatic and Fitness Centres will be closed on Remembrance Day.

Free public skate on Remembrance Day - The following arenas will offer free skating from 1 - 2:30 p.m.:

Shouldice (N.W.)
Stew Hendry/Henry Viney (N.E.)
Optimist/George Blundun (S.W.)

Wildflower Arts Centre will be closed on Remembrance Day.
North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre will be closed on Remembrance Day.

City of Calgary Parks

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
Park hours: sunrise to sunset year-round.
The Nature Centre will be closed on Remembrance Day.

Devonian Gardens
Open daily from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
After mall hours, access from plus 15 (weekends/holidays: use Bankers Hall or Holt Renfrew bridges only).

Other Facilities

Fort Calgary
Artisan's Fair - November 11, 2012 from 11:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. In lieu of admission, we encourage our visitors to bring along non-perishable food items for donation to the Veteran's Food Bank.

Calgary Zoo
Gates open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, (Zoo closes at 6 p.m.).

In tribute to our Canadian military, past and present, the Calgary Zoo will be offering FREE admission to members of our Canadian military and 50% off admission for their immediate family members accompanying them. This offer is in effect for day admission from November 9th – 30th, 2012 and also includes Zoolights evening event starting November 23rd – 30th.

Please present valid Veteran's Affairs Card, Service I.D. Card (regular force or reserves), Military Card or discharge papers (with photo I.D.) on arrival at the Zoo’s north gate.

Remembrance Day Events

The City of Calgary would like to remind Calgarians of the variety of venues that will be hosting Remembrance Day services this year, including:

Union Cemetery
28 Ave. and Spiller Rd. S.E.
Canadian military and the Mounted Police have seen a lot of change since Confederation, as well as a lot of continuity. Join in a Remembrance Day tour of Union Cemetery that examines these military units and men buried here.
Tours at 1 p.m. & 3:30 p.m.

Jubilee Auditorium
14th Street and 16th Avenue N.W.
The service begins at 10 a.m.

Aero Space Museum
4629 McCall Way N.E.
The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m.

Calgary International Airport
Main Terminal Departures Level
10:30 a.m. - Calgary International Airport Pipe Band and Honour Guard parade
10:40 a.m. - Ceremony commences for airport employees and travellers who wish to participate.

Central Memorial Park
1221 2 St. S.W.
Central Memorial Park (also known as Memorial Park) is Calgary’s oldest park and is located in the heart of the Beltline. Remembrance Day ceremonies are held here annually. Park features include:
Boer War Memorial equestrian statue
World War I soldier statue in front of the library

The Military Museums
4520 Crowchild Tr. S.W.
Ceremony begins at 10:45 a.m. There will be limited parking available on site in the field to the east of the Parade Square.  Parking is also available at the Flames Community Arena to the south.  Please dress warmly and plan to arrive early as past events have been well attended.  Coffee and hot chocolate will be available (in limited quantity).

11 a.m.

Battalion Park
3001 Signal Hill Dr S.W. (overlooking Westhills Towne Centre)
10:40 a.m. - Ceremony will centre on the monument at the bottom of the steps leading up to the Battalion numbers.

Poppy Fund Crosses Ceremony along Memorial Drive
North side Memorial Drive, west of Centre Street.

There are also many services at Royal Canadian Legion Branches around Calgary.
