Free New Years Eve Public Transit

To ensure Calgarians have a safe transportation alternative on New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31, Calgary Transit will provide free service on all CTrains and buses after 6:00 p.m. to the end of service.

There will be a regular weekday level of service on New Year’s Eve and a Sunday level of service on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2010.

Please be reminded that effective January 1, 2010, there will be an adjustment to Calgary Transit fares, as reflected in the operating budget approved by City Council.

The following fares will increase:
  • adult cash/single ticket from $2.50 to $2.75
  • adult monthly pass from $83.00 to $85.25
  • adult ticket books of 10 from $23.00 to $24
  • adult day pass from $7.50 to $8.25
All other fares, including the low income monthly pass, and seniors fares will remain unchanged.

Seniors passes remain the lowest in the country with a $35 annual fee and $15 annual fee for low-income seniors.

  1. What I find as a big deterrent for using public transit is simply having the correct change. Many of the private parking lots downtown accept VISA or debit cards. I imagine even a 0.5% increase in C-Train ridership rates would substantiate the cost/benefit analysis required to install these machines.

  2. Instead of increasing fees why don't they focus on enfocing them. I would bet that at least 50% of the people that ride the train during peak times into the core do not purchase tickets.

  3. How are they expecting people to use the public transit when it is cheaper to drive? You have to pay to park, pay a lot to ride the train, you can not even leave your house with out it costing you and arm and a leg. And they want people to try and take buses to the train, the bus in my neighbourhood only comes once an hour if it shows up at all. That is how great our public transit system is. And of course they will talk about all this extra money that they are making, because we have to pay more, surprise surprise. Most people do not even pay during the rush hour times, so why should the person who takes the train in the evening have to pay for the expensive ticket, and the person during the shouldn't? And why are we paying more then pretty much every city in Canada? That is not right. So I will be driving. They were not worth the ticket prices before, and are not worth it now.

  4. I'm going to agree with the second comment above. I have to use the transit system sometimes 3 or 4 times per day to get to and from home and my 2 jobs, paying fare each way. I'm spending $8.25 avg per day 5 days a week and each time I get on that train I watch all these kids (adults too) chat amongst themselves about how easy it is to travel without paying. They pride themselves for getting away with it for so long.
It frustrates me that honesty has to now pay more per ride because the city doesn't want to enforce transit bylaws more strictly.
I'm all for paying a decent fare if it means that my money is going towards expansion/improvements to the public transit system, but wouldn't it be fair if they took the time and resources to enforce the mandatory ticket purchase rather than increasing fares?

  5. Anonymous, why aren't you just buying a pass?

  6. I'd have to agree with the 3rd comment. The fare that Calgary Transit charges is most absolutely ridiculous for the service they offer. It's sad to see that when a person is maybe 25 or 50 cents short on their fare that the bus drives gives them a hard time and pretty much harasses them about the few extra cents, yet when a bum gets on and has absolutley no fare at all the bus driver see's past it and give them a free ride. I mean as far as us paying $2.75 for fare, the transfers only last you an hour and a half and to be practical, its not like people can even get their fair usage out of what they pay, most people dont sit there and ride the buses until there transfer time runs out - the purpose of a transfer is to benefit the paying customers which i personally feel they do not. AND on top of all that non sense, they keep jacking up the prices of fare as each year passes by.. and for what? because it sure as hell is not to improve their services. Toronto you pay $3.50 it is i believe and that isnt a bad rate CONSIDERING that their buses run 24 hours. I mean in calgary we pay 75 Cents less and there has been no improvement in extending running hours of buses or anything of that sort. INSTEAD the city uses all the extra money or should i say wastes all the extra money on renovations of LRT stations (which half of the stations dont need the reno), or the most recent the huge waste of consumers money on new c-trains, like get real Calgary Transit, you just came out with new c-trains not that long ago, as well as all the c-trains they have running are in great condition. There are so many complaints i have against Calgary Transit and i could go on and on and on but i'll sum it up here, for short Calgary Transit your services suck =)

  7. Well, why don't you become a driver for City Transit then, they're always looking, and you can WOW everybody with your stellar performance. Or, better yet, get a car.

By the way, Calgary HAS the cheapest transit prices in all of Canada.

A critic is like a dog: he knows the way home, but can't drive the car.
