Wagonstage - bringing science, nature and performing arts to children in our city

Every summer since 1971, The City of Calgary partners with the University of Calgary’s Drama Department to bring interactive, educational children’s theatre to life. Wagonstage is a travelling theatre production written and directed by theatre professionals and designed and acted by graduate and undergraduate Drama students. Wagonstage has always been committed to new work produced by local artists. Approximately half of the plays produced for Wagonstage over the last 41 years have been commissioned from Calgary playwrights.

This year’s play, Raccoon Rescue, has Gramps discovering that a family of raccoons are living in his attic. He calls in the help of Anton the Exterminator to get rid of them. Their plans are quickly altered when Tracy, a ten year old science enthusiast rescues the raccoons from the extermination and helps to return them to their natural home by the creek.

Each Wagonstage performance not only gives children a front seat at the performance, it gives them a leading role in the play, providing many opportunities to interact with the characters.

Wagonstage sets up in the great outdoor spaces in our city, so whether you’re taking the kids to a swim lesson, experiencing one of the city’s fabulous festivals or events or checking out the penguins at the Calgary Zoo, there’s bound to be a performance taking place.
