The old saying - standing on the shoulders of giants - is a reference to the fact that any new insight or development is almost certainly based on the knowledge and lessons gained by those that came before us.
That's in part why The City of Calgary, along with other levels government and community partners, celebrates seniors’ week. This year the celebration takes place June 4, through June 12.
It’s important that Calgarians acknowledge the contributions of seniors’ as they’ve lived, worked and shaped the world we enjoy today. It’s also important to note some interesting facts about Calgary’s population:
- The first baby boomers turn 65 in 2011 and there are over 297,000 baby boomers in Calgary
- The senior population will grow in major increments every 5 years
- By the mid 2020s, the senior population in Calgary will essentially have doubled today’s population of seniors
- Today, about one in 10 Calgarians are seniors. By 2026, this will rise to one in six. By 2036, one in five Calgarians will be seniors.
- In the early 2030s, for the first time ever, the number of adults aged 65+ will surpass the number of children under 14 years of age in Calgary
Senior’s Week is celebrated all over the city with events large and small be sure to checkout your local seniors' organizations for community activities.
